The Dachstein
A World Heritage Site
At 2,996 meters, the Dachstein is the second-highest peak in the Northern Limestone Alps. Although the Dachstein is not a “real three-thousander,” it has long since become synonymous with the Dachstein brand, at least since UNESCO added the Dachstein mountain landscape, along with Hallstatt and the Inner Salzkammergut, to the list of “World Heritage Sites” in 1997.
“World Heritage Site” — this distinction now adorns this magnificent mountain, which has always inspired people with its diverse landscapes and is not without reason considered a “mountain personality”: Rugged cliffs above green alpine pastures, bizarre peaks, towers, and massive walls, glacial ice, limestone cliffs, and secluded plateaus, primeval forests and panoramic summits, mysterious karst springs, and mirror-like mountain lakes characterize the scenery around the Dachstein.
Many notable figures have left their mark around the Dachstein. Painters and writers, researchers and noble patrons, mountaineers, climbers and speleologists, miners and craftsmen. The fascination of the Dachstein becomes palpable when one focuses on the craftsmanship in its surroundings.
