9 days around the Dachstein

This classic tour combines the most beautiful sections of the Dachstein Circular Trail into a varied 9-day walking holiday. The route takes you through Styria, Salzburg and Upper Austria, combining alpine mountain landscapes, idyllic alpine pastures, stunning lakes and the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The route

  • Overnight stay in Gosau
  • Pick up your travel documents at the accommodation
  • Overnight stay at the Hofpürglhütte
  • Approx. 10 km, 4–5 hours, elevation gain/loss: 850 / 860 m 
  • Luggage transport from Gosau to Ramsau, where you will spend the night the following day
  • You must bring your own luggage and hut sleeping bag for the overnight stay at the Hofpürglhütte!
  • Descent to the Türlwand and overnight stay at a 3-star hotel in Ramsau am Dachstein
  • Approx. 12.5 km, 6 hours, elevation gain/loss: 895 / 882 m
  1.  Hike in the valley (recommended even in bad weather) starting right from the hotel, with views of the imposing Dachstein massif, and an ascent via the Anton Baum Trail. Approx. 6.5 km, 4–5 hours, elevation gain/loss: 1,044 / 69 m
  2. Ascent via the Dachstein Cable Car and hike along the Dachstein Massif to the Guttenberghaus. Approx. 9.5 km, 4–5 hours, elevation gain/loss: 264 / 861 m 
  • Overnight stay at the Guttenberghaus
  • Luggage transport from Ramsau to Gröbming, where you will stay overnight the following day
  • You must bring your own luggage and a sleeping bag for the night at the Guttenberghaus!

ATTENTION: For the route using the Dachstein Cable Car, it is absolutely necessary to register at www.derdachstein.at .Otherwise, all seats in the gondola may be fully booked. Each guest is responsible for making their own reservation. 

  • Overnight stay at the Steinerhaus mountain inn
  • Approx. 13 km, 6 hours, elevation gain/loss: 552 / 860 m 

Hike from Stoderzinken via the Notgasse (a rocky gorge featuring rock carvings up to 2,000 years old) to the Viehbergalm and on via the Hochmühleck to the Steinitzenalm.

  • Descent to Bad Mitterndorf and overnight stay in Bad Mitterndorf
  • Approx. 22 km, 7 hours, elevation gain/loss: 627 / 1,590 m 
  • Luggage transport from Gröbming to Bad Mitterndorf

Train ride from Bad Mitterndorf to Bad Aussee. From Bad Aussee, hike through the Koppental valley along the Traun River to Obertraun and on to the Hallstatt train station. A visit to the Koppenbrüller Cave is recommended along the way. Then take the ferry across the lake to Hallstatt.

  • Overnight stay in Hallstatt
  • Approx. 15 km, 4–5 hours, elevation gain/loss: 166 / 286 m
  • Luggage transport from Bad Mitterndorf to Hallstatt

Take the ferry from Hallstatt Market to Hallstatt Train Station. Hike along the East Shore Trail on the eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt to Au and on to Bad Goisern. Hike up to the Goisererhütte via the Trockentannalm.

  • Overnight stay at the Goisererhütte
  • Approx. 17 km, 7 hours, elevation gain/loss: 1,108 / 52 m
  • You must bring your own luggage and sleeping bag for the overnight stay at the Goisererhütte!
  • Approx. 7 km, 2–3 hours, elevation gain/loss: 46 / 873 m
  • Luggage transport from Hallstatt to Gosau

Luggage pickup in Gosau — your luggage will be ready at 2:00 PM latest. Individual departure. An extra night can be booked.

A lodging tax is payable on site at the accommodations (approx. €1 to €4 per person per night). Children under 15 are usually exempt.

Overnight stay in a mountain hut – what should you keep in mind?

  • *Mountain hut sleeping bag: Blankets are available in the huts; only a lightweight cotton or silk sleeping bag is required. 
  • Overnight stay in a shared room or dormitory at the hut. 
  • Most huts do not accept card payments. Bring enough cash for meals, etc., on site.
  • Due to their location, not all huts can offer running water, hot water, or showers. In some cases, the toilets do not have a flush.
  • Dogs allowed upon request; not permitted in the dormitory. Overnight stay with owner in the winter room; dog kennels available in some cases. Additional fees apply on-site. In Austria, a general leash and muzzle requirement applies!
  • We recommend purchasing travel cancellation insurance.
  • Luggage cannot be transported to the following huts: Hofpürglhütte, Guttenberghaus, and Goisererhütte. Luggage is transported from the previous accommodation to the next. For hut accommodations during the hike, you must carry your own luggage and sleeping bag.

For environmental reasons, we recommend traveling to and from the tour by public transportation (train/bus).
