Following the water on the Dachstein Circular Trail

4 days around the Dachstein

This 4-day hike takes you through the most water-rich landscapes around the Dachstein. On easy and varied stages, you’ll hike through the Ausseerland and the Salzkammergut – past karst springs, moorland lakes, rivers and Lake Hallstatt. The tour is particularly suitable for leisurely hikers who want to discover the gentler side of the Dachstein Circular Trail.

  • Duration: 4 days, 3 nights
  • Route: Hike through the Ausseerland and the Salzkammergut along the northern side of the Dachstein Mountains
  • Target group: Ideal for leisurely hikers, nature lovers and beginners with a good level of fitness
  • Natural highlights: Lake Ödensee and Lake Hallstatt as the tour’s main natural gems
  • Villages: Bad Mitterndorf, Bad Aussee, Obertraun, Hallstatt and Bad Goisern
  • Comfort: Luggage transfer, boat trip across Lake Hallstatt, and bus and train transfers included

The route

  • Accommodation in Bad Mitterndorf
  • Approx. 19 km, 5 hours, elevation gain/loss: 182 m/323 m
  • The stage starts in Bad Mitterndorf, passing through the district of Obersdorf and past the Kumitzberg to Knoppen. It continues to Pichl-Kainisch, where you can observe the impressive natural phenomenon of the Strumern during the spring snowmelt. Spring water bubbles up from the forest floor here and eventually joins together to form a proper river. The route continues to the idyllic natural lake, the Ödensee, where you’ll receive your well-deserved snack at the Kohlröserlhütte. Following the Kainischtraun, you’ll arrive in Bad Aussee.
  • Overnight stay in Bad Aussee.
  • Approx. 17 km, approx. 4 hours, elevation gain/loss: 192 m/351 m
  • From Bad Aussee, you hike along the Koppentraun River through the wild and romantic Koppental valley to Obertraun. The tour continues along the Obertraun High Trail and the eastern shore hiking trail of Lake Hallstatt to the Hallstatt train station. A visit to the Koppenbrüller Cave is highly recommended along the way. Enjoy the impressive view of this historic town during the subsequent ferry ride across the lake, and then set out to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Afterward, take the bus to Bad Goisern.
  • Overnight stay in Bad Goisern.

On the train ride from Bad Goisern to Bad Mitterndorf, including luggage transport, you can reflect on the highlights of your hike.

Individual departures from Bad Mitterndorf or additional nights can be booked.
