  • Target group: Ideal for active walkers with a good level of fitness
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site: Walk through the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut region
  • Natural highlights: Lake Gosau, alpine karst landscapes and high-altitude trails with spectacular views
  • Villages: Ramsau am Dachstein, Filzmoos, Gosau and other mountain villages along the route

The route

without luggage transport

  • Overnight stay in Gosau
  • Pick up your travel documents at the accommodation

From the beautiful Lake Gosau, you’ll take the cable car up to the Zwieselalm. From there, you’ll hike along the Gosau Ridge. Passing the imposing Donnerkogel and the Bischofsmütze, you’ll eventually reach the Hofpürglhütte.

  • Overnight stay at the Hofpürglhütte
  • Approx. 10 km, 4–5 hours, elevation gain/loss: 850 / 860 m

Today’s route from the Hofpürglhütte winds its way between the tree line and rugged limestone terrain. On this high-altitude trail, you’ll circle the valley above Filzmoos and, after passing below the Dachstein South Face Cave, reach the Dachstein South Face Hut.

  • Overnight stay at the Dachstein Südwandhütte
  • Approx. 11 km, 5–6 hours, elevation gain/loss: 762 / 586 m
  1. Hike across the valley (recommended even in bad weather). From the Südwandhütte, the trail leads below the Dachstein South Face to the valley station and on to Ramsau with views of the imposing Dachstein massif; here you hike along the village before crossing the tree line again via the Anton Baum Trail and finally reaching the exposed Guttenberghaus. Approx. 15 km, 4–5 hours, elevation gain/loss: 1,048 / 785 m
  2. Ascent via the Dachstein Cable Car (costs to be paid on site). Here, too, you start from the Südwandhütte and head first to the valley station of the Dachstein Cable Car. After the steep ascent of nearly 1,000 meters in elevation, you cross the Schladming Glacier. The trail continues through high-alpine terrain and eventually leads you to the Guttenberghaus as well. Approx. 9.5 km, 4–5 hours, elevation gain/loss: 264 / 861 m

ATTENTION: For the route using the Dachstein Cable Car, it is absolutely necessary to www.derdachstein.at. Otherwise, all seats in the gondola may be fully booked. Each guest is responsible for making their own reservation. The gondola ascent can also be booked as an add-on for an additional fee of €40 per person.

The next stage takes you from the Guttenberghaus across the "Am Stein" plateau through a beautiful karst landscape toward Krippenegg and finally to the Wiesberghaus.

  • Overnight stay at the Wiesberghaus
  • Approx. 16 km, 6 hours, elevation gain/loss: 241 / 1,781 m

From the Wiesberghaus, you’ll hike toward Plassen. Here you’ll pass the world’s oldest salt mine (about 7,000 years old). From here, the trail leads past the historic Rudolfsturm tower and down winding roads to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hallstatt. After exploring the town center, take the bus back to the starting point in Gosau.

  • Overnight stay in Gosau
  • Approx. 12 km, 5–6 hours, elevation gain/loss: 278 / 1,614 m
